On Wednesdays, we’ll reflect: See below for some some of what I’ve learned from the week to inspire reflection, a well-being soundbite, and a view of my wish list / recs / things I’m currently obsessing over. 🙂

The Beat Goes On: Why Non-Conformity Still Matters Today
This week, my curiosity was piqued during a chat with a friend over lunch about our favorite San Francisco spots. We got to talking about Vesuvio Cafe and its history as a hangout for the Beat Generation legends – Kerouac, Ginsberg, Cassady, and Ferlinghetti, who opened City Lights Bookstore right next door. I've zipped past both countless times, but never really knew or delved into their profound cultural significance until now. Naturally, I had to dig a little deeper.
the Beat Generation emerged in the post-WWII era, fundamentally rebelling against the era's pervasive conformity and materialism. Their driving force was a genuine search for authentic experiences, spiritual truths, and personal liberation, leading them to reject conventional norms in favor of raw artistic experimentation and alternative lifestyles. These writers, many of whom settled right here in North Beach, revolutionized literature with their spontaneous prose, stream-of-consciousness narratives, and free verse poetry, ultimately influencing iconic musicians like Bob Dylan and The Doors.
This deep dive into the Beats got me thinking about our world today. It feels like there's a growing undercurrent, especially among the younger generation, towards embracing non-conformity and questioning traditional ideas of success. You see it in the rise of authentic content creation – think Alix Earle's vlogs, showing the messy reality of day-to-day life and building a following on relatability. Beyond individuals forging their own paths instead of chasing traditional corporate ladders, companies themselves are increasingly prioritizing work-life balance. Having hobbies outside of work is no longer seen as a sign of slacking off; in fact, it makes us more desirable colleagues who value all aspects of a meaningful life. It’s a powerful echo of the Beats' pursuit of what truly matters.
So, what's the takeaway from the Beat Generation for us today? It's a subtle but powerful nudge to question the narratives we're fed about what a "successful" or "meaningful" life looks like. Their radical pursuit of authentic experience, their willingness to expose vulnerabilities, and their rejection of easy answers offer a timeless lesson: sometimes, the greatest inspiration comes from daring to be truly ourselves, even if it feels a little messy or unconventional. Maybe it's about embracing that hobby you've been putting off, speaking up about something you truly believe in, or simply allowing yourself to be a little less polished and a lot more real in your day-to-day life.

Beyond the Desk: Why Your Lunch Break Matters More Than You Think
This week, I want to build on last week's theme of mindful eating, but with a twist. While mindful eating can absolutely happen anywhere, even at your desk, I've come to realize that where and how you eat can be just as crucial for your well-being. It’s so easy to get sucked into the workday grind – mindlessly snacking through lunch, rushing through meals to finish early, and completely missing the opportunity to truly nourish our bodies. Yet, taking a proper break to eat doesn't just refuel us mentally; it offers an incredible chance to connect with colleagues and, as a result, find greater meaning in our daily work.
Over the past six months, I've made a conscious effort to grab lunch with a different colleague whenever I'm in the office. I'll be honest, it's not always practical; some days, meetings just overlap, or there’s a tight deadline. But I used to view taking a proper lunch break, especially with others, as a bit of a waste of time. Now, it's significantly influenced how I approach my day. I find myself genuinely excited to be productive in the morning, knowing I’ve got that 30-minute lunch break to look forward to. It’s my chance to truly disconnect, recharge, and then plug back in to finish the day stronger. Plus, it's such a simple yet powerful way to deepen connections with my coworkers, making me genuinely excited to be in the office and see their faces.
Again, this isn't anything revolutionary, but if you're finding your motivation dipping or feeling like you can't catch your breath during the week, I highly encourage you to try incorporating a weekly lunch with a coworker you've been meaning to connect with. It's done wonders for my energy and mindset throughout the day. It’s a beautiful reminder that while many of us work to make a living, we can also find profound ways to be truly present and live our lives even within a work setting, rather than waiting until the weekend to finally "turn off." What small, mindful pause could you add to your workday this week?
3/3. What’s Wowing Me: Weekly Obsessions
I've been meaning to share this gem for a while! My bachelorette party was this past weekend, and I knew I wanted to do a unique hat decorating activity with my girls. Instead of grabbing generic hats from Amazon and risking questionable quality, I really wanted to find hats my friends would genuinely love and wear again, offering a variety of colors and styles.
My search led me to Rebecca from @OneOfAKindDesignNC on Etsy, and she was an absolute dream to work with. When I told her about the bachelorette weekend, she helped me curate a fantastic selection of hats from her inventory, varying in size, style, and color. What truly blew me away was that without even asking, she sent along an incredible array of decorating supplies: pins, hat bands in different styles, glue, feathers, lace, and charms. It was so incredibly thoughtful and truly elevated the whole experience.
If you have an event coming up and enough time to plan, I highly encourage you to opt for a more personalized experience like this instead of relying on quick Amazon purchases. Not only do you get to support a small business, but you also have the chance to connect with someone dedicated to making your event truly special. Thank you, Rebecca, for everything!
