What stories do we create in silence and how do they shape our relationships?
A friend and I finally caught up this week after months of missed texts and delayed replies. You know the pattern: You see the text when you’re busy and mentally tell yourself “I’ll respond when I have a minute,” that turns into days, then weeks. The longer you wait, the heavier the message feels. Eventually, it’s not just a text…it’s a source of anxiety.
We’d both been doing it. She had texted me three separate times, no responses from me. I’d texted her twice, similarly, crickets. But when we finally got on the phone, it felt like no time had passed. What was supposed to be a 5-minute logistical thing turned into an hour of laughs, catching up, and admitting we’d both been stuck in the same loop—feeling bad, then avoiding the feeling, which only made it worse.
It made me wonder how often we pre-assign a meaning to an anxious feeling that either 1) isn’t really there or 2) develops as a result of our reaction to a pre-assigned feeling. How often we let guilt or anxiety grow roots in something that could be resolved with a simple “Hey, I’ve missed you.”
Sometimes, the hardest part isn’t the reconnection—it’s the story we tell ourselves in the space between.
