On Fridays, we’ll take a breath: See below for a food for thought as you enter your weekend to reground on what matters most 🙂
Food for Thought
If I stopped doing this tomorrow, would I feel a sense of loss, or a sense of relief?
You may have read the title and thought…wait, that doesn’t make much sense. Completing a goal feels…great!
With the rush of goal setting that accompanies one year wrapping and another beginning, I’ve been reflecting on some on the things I outlined for myself and the friction we may feel when trying to move toward a milestone. Does finding yourself unable to act on a goal with the motivation you typically possess raise a question that the goal doesn't actually belong to you?
This isn't always the case, of course. But, with the amount of social media we consume, it’s can be easy to set a goal maybe because someone else presented it in a ‘aesthetic’ way. (A personal example of mine is doing 4 circuits of 75 Hard to complete out the ‘Live Hard’ challenge. Something I initially thought I really wanted to do this year, but as I started calendaring out when I would need to do it, I felt a bit less excited about it - not because it was hard but because that desire to finish it wasn’t really there and I was nervous my lack of internal desire to complete it would taint the love I have for 75 Hard…red flag?)
When we reflect on our progress, we tend to equate the act of doing with willpower. If we just try harder, we can force - result. But what if that struggle is rooted in authenticity (or lack thereof)?
The idea of "sticking to" a goal implies a bond. It can be hard to be attached to something that you don’t believe in when the noise settles down. Are we just…trying to animate a ghost? That might sound harsh, but it may explain why you might feel drained rather than driven by a goal.
Brute-forcing your way to a goal may not feel as rewarding as completing the hard work that a goal you truly believed in requires. As you wrap up your week, I invite you to take a moment to separate those ghosts from your living goals. If your answer to the question above is relief, you may have found a ghost. There is power in letting those go to make room for what moves you.
