Motivation

I bet it’s no huge surprise that as someone who writes a newsletter on how our internal rhythms can flow within the time of a seven day week, I am a planner. I truly love the process of mapping things out. Setting goals with timelines for myself is how my brain works, and I find it easier to digest my day and everything racing through my mind with that lens. While this can be a strength in certain areas, I have to admit it can also be confining.

The easiest connection to explain this by is work deliverables (balancing getting something done right by a deadline set)… but I find this tension shows up for me in personal areas of my life. A perfect example happened over the weekend. I like to schedule my weekdays and that’s easier when everyone around us in a similar mindset of prioritizing their work and their to-dos. On the weekends, one of my favorite things is getting to enjoy a home cooked meal. Yet, this involves another person’s schedule and energy (not just my own) which doesn't always align with my mental itinerary.

In my head this past weekend, I was planning on eating ~ 7:30 PM, and working back from that on when we’d need to cook. As the time approached, we were still finishing things around the house. If I had been alone, I probably would have whipped up something quick just to stay on track with my timing. Instead, we chose to spend an hour cooking a thoughtful meal together. We didn't sit down until nearly 9:00 PM. I ‘sacrificed’ the initial timeline to prioritize the quality of the experience and the end result (a nice and intentional meal).

Timelines are goal posts, but they shouldn't become cages. If a schedule restricts you from doing something in a way that is actually enjoyable or meaningful, it might not be worth keeping. This week, I am being intentional with trying to find that balance.

Intention for the Week: Honor your deadlines, but don't let a rush compromise the end result or enjoying the process. Seek the balance where efficiency meets excellence, ensuring that your speed doesn’t outpace your standards.
