On Fridays, we’ll take a breath: See below for some commentary on apparel trends I’m loving or things I’m eyeing, a fun activity to consider, and some food for thought as you enter your weekend 🙂
1/3. Fashion / Retail Therapy
Scarf Styling for Spring
Maybe it’s the milkmaid dress trend all over my TikTok feed, or the typical surge of pastel hues this time of year, or the renewed appreciation for old-school elegance, often termed "old money”, I’ve associated with Sofia Richie's evolving style that has come to life on the runway in the Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton shows…but I’ve noticed an uptick in scarf styling, particularly the Parisian knot.
I've quietly accumulated a personal collection of scarves, originally intended to tie onto a bag, because I love thrifting them when a unique one catches my eye. But they’ve been sitting in my closet for some time. Noticing a lot more people re-introduce them in their outfits has got me thinking it’s a unique accessory that offers a simple yet effective way to enhance an outfit's versatility and I’m tempted to test mine out over the next week or so. I put together a couple of inspo pics as well, in case this catches your eye.
2/3. Fun!
Paddle On
I’ve been embarking on my third journey of doing 75 Hard over the past 20 days. One of the things I value most about the challenge is how it pushes me to go outside more than I typically would. Over the weekend, that means crafting a fun way to get outside and do something active - bonus points if I can connect with someone while doing so.
My mom visited this past weekend and we decided to go to Golden Gate Park, both to get my 45-minute outdoor activity in and to see something other than the Marina Green. As we were walking, we stumbled upon the paddle boats at Blue Heron Boathouse. I suggested the activity sort of as a joke at first, but my mom was in, and we spent ~30 minutes paddling the park loop.
It was something different 😊 And I thought it was a great way to make the most out of 75 Hard versus looking at how it impacts my weekend negatively.
Most of our major cities have a place to either rent paddle or cycle boats. If you get a group of 12-20 friends, it’s a fun thing to try and do while spicing up the weekend with something that isn’t just going to a bar. Or, it’s something you can do at a park, for an activity that is a bit more personal and requires less people.
After quick google searching, here are some to start your search if you’re interested:
SF
Blue Heron Boathouse in GGB
Bay Area Brew Boat for a large group event
California Windsurfing for pedal boats, windsurfing, and kayaks
Boston
Cycle Boat Boston on the Boston Harbor
Paddle Boston and Community Boating on Charles River
Chicago
Chicago Boat Company for a large group cycle boat event
DC
Tidal Basin: Paddle Boats at the National Mall
Potomac Paddle Club for a larger group in the Wharf
I’m definitely going to bug my friends to see if we can get a big group to do something like this on a weekend as it warms up in SF, let me know if you do too 😊
3/3. Food for Thought
Doxa (δόξα): Fleeting opinions, sensory perceptions, the "shadows" of reality. The domain of opinion, belief, or probable knowledge based on personal experience and interpretation
Episteme (ἐπιστήμη): True knowledge, unchanging forms, the "sunlit" essence of reality. knowledge or understanding based on reason and evidence
In which areas of your life do you operate primarily from doxa—reacting to shifting 'shadows'—and where might seeking episteme—the enduring 'forms' of truth—bring lasting clarity and purpose?
I learned about these principles as I read Excellent Sheep by William Deresiewicz this week. Deresiewicz emphasizes that a true liberal arts education's primary purpose is to liberate us from doxa by teaching us to recognize, question, and transcend it.
This got me thinking about where in our lives we may succumb to operating from the lens of doxa, versus episteme. When do we mistake treating fleeting opinions as enduring reality? What cherished beliefs, when rigorously challenged, might reveal a deeper, more authentic connection to truth, and ultimately, to ourselves and our reality?
I'm so grateful you've taken the time to read and engage with the newsletter. To help me make it better, I'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback you have. Feel free to send any requests, ideas, or suggestions to [email protected]!
